Checklist: relocating your business to Armenia in 30 days
Before you leave
- A passport valid for at least another year.
- Documents on your income and source of funds for the last 1–2 years: statements, contracts, certificates. The bank will ask for them.
- Current client contracts and a list of who needs to be told about your new payment details.
- Money for the first 2–3 months, in cash or on cards that work abroad.
- If you have a business at home, decide whether to close it or keep it. This affects your taxes.
Week 1: the basics
- SIM card
You need an Armenian number for the bank, government services and taxis. See mobile SIM and eSIM in Armenia. - Housing and a lease
A lease will be useful as your address. See renting an apartment in Yerevan. - Public services number
It is not required to register a sole proprietorship, but banks and employers usually ask for it. See how to get a public services number. - Passport translation
A notarised translation into Armenian, for registering your business.
Week 2: registration
- Choose the legal form
Working alone with modest turnover usually means a sole proprietorship. Partners, a team or large clients point to an LLC. See Sole proprietor or LLC. - Register
The state fee is AMD 3,000 for a sole proprietorship and AMD 0 for an LLC. An IE is registered right after filing, an LLC within 2 business days. The TIN is assigned at registration. - Apply for a tax regime
Turnover tax or micro-business: apply right away, no later than 20 days after registration. For IT, check the 1% rate. - Get an electronic signature
For your tax account and e-invoices.
Week 3: money
- Personal account
See personal bank account. - Current account for the IE or LLC
The bank will ask about your clients, contracts and source of funds. See business bank account. - Transfer your savings
See money transfers to Armenia.
Week 4: getting to work
- Re-sign your contracts
New payment details, and a contract subject that matches your registered activity. - Issue your first invoice
The payment reference should match the contract, which means fewer questions from the bank. For platforms, see Upwork and Deel. - Set up your bookkeeping
Note the deadlines: the quarterly turnover tax return is due by the 20th of the month after the quarter. See the tax reporting calendar. - Think about your status
EAEU citizens can stay up to 180 days a year without a residence permit. For longer stays you need a residence permit. Also consider tax residency.
Common mistakes
- Missing the deadline for a special regime and ending up on the general regime with VAT.
- Arriving without income documents, which delays opening a bank account.
- Taking client payments to a personal card instead of the IE account.
- Leaving the old business unattended. Returns and taxes back home still have to be filed and paid.
