Updated: October 2026 · 3 min read

In short: A foreign child can study free of charge at a public school in Yerevan. If at least one parent is a foreign citizen, you can choose a Russian-language class. First-grade enrolment is online in summer, but schools also admit children during the year. Citizenship and a residence permit are not required, but you will need address registration, a public services number and translated documents. There are private Russian-language and international schools. Municipal kindergartens take applications online on the city hall website.

Public schools

The school year starts on 1 September. According to T—Zh, since 2025 children start first grade in the calendar year they turn six, and seven-year-olds go straight into second grade. School lasts 12 years.

Parents choose the language of study if at least one of them is a foreigner, a dual citizen or stateless. If both parents are Armenian citizens, teaching is in Armenian. Russian-language classes still include Armenian language, history and literature. According to T—Zh, about 10% of Yerevan's 150-plus public schools have Russian-language classes. The city hall has listed schools No. 7, 8 and 55 in Kentron, No. 77 and 132 in Arabkir, No. 164 in Nor Nork and others. Places can be scarce, so start looking early.
